SEN/D Groups: Making Music Accessible for Everyone

SEN/D Groups: Making Music Accessible for Everyone

At Serenity Sensory Music, I believe that music should be an inclusive experience for all, especially for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEN/D). My customized sensory music sessions are specifically designed to cater to a variety of needs, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage in a meaningful and therapeutic way.

Customized Sessions for Unique Needs

Each group session can accommodate up to 8 participants with SEN/D, creating a supportive environment tailored to their individual requirements. With my background as a qualified teacher at a special needs school in Bath and North East Somerset, I have dedicated the last seven years to understanding the diverse needs of my pupils. I have worked with children and young adults aged 4 to 19 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) across all year groups.

Experience and Understanding

My extensive experience with SEN/D diagnoses since 2014 has taught me the profound therapeutic value of music. I know firsthand how music can both calm and stimulate individuals who may have limited awareness. It serves as a powerful form of communication, allowing participants to express themselves in ways that words may not capture.

The Workshop Experience

During our sensory music workshops, we will use music as a tool to explore a wide spectrum of experiences. Here’s what participants can expect:

  • Visual Prompts: Utilizing images, PECs symbols, and Makaton signing to enhance understanding.

  • Engaging Activities: Simple color-coded notation and musical cues will guide us through our musical journey.

  • Multi-Sensory Approach: We will engage four senses—sound, sight, smell, and touch—to create a rich, immersive experience.

Exploring the Four Senses:

  • Sound: Music will be at the heart of our sessions, allowing us to explore different sounds and rhythms.

  • Sight: Gentle colored lighting, photographs, and video clips will enrich the visual experience.

  • Smell: Calming scents like lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus will create a soothing atmosphere.

  • Touch: A beautiful collection of tactile instruments and sensory items will invite exploration through touch.

Addressing Various Needs

I understand that each participant may have unique challenges, including but not limited to:

  • Autism

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety

  • Sensory processing disorder

  • Developmental delays

  • And many more

My aim is to create a space where participants can develop communication skills, social skills, and emotional understanding through the medium of music. Music can boost confidence, foster a sense of identity, and enrich daily life.
